GETTING STARTEDJeremy Foley's first job was at age 10 as a newspaper hawker in the neighborhood of Tierrasanta in San Diego California. He would stand on the corner at a busy intersection on Sunday mornings with his stack of newspapers and sell them to the people waiting at the streetlight. However, Jeremy was destined for other things as a student at the Creative and Performing Arts Academy. It was here that at age 12 that Jeremy was going to school when Sea World of San Diego came looking for youngsters to be in a promotional video tape that they were making to sell in their gift shop. Students wishing to audition for the Sea World video were allowed to miss class to do so. Since Jeremy hadn't done his math homework that day his partial motive for auditioning was so that he could miss his math class. Jeremy was chosen to be in the promotional video. The video, which starred writer, animal activist and enthusiast Jack Hanna, took longer than anticipated but that suited Jeremy just fine. Not only did Jeremy get to play hooky from school but he also got to go behind the scenes at Sea World, he got to participate in all the Sea World shows and even got to hug Shamu the killer whale. Overall, the entire experience hooked Jeremy on the idea of acting but since none of his family knew anything about the profession, he didn't know where to go. Fortunately he met another kid who had acted as an extra that told him about a company in North Hollywood that could get him work. Jeremy called and found out the company was holding a “Super Saturday” where they auditioned kids to become extra's. Jeremy's mother, who believed that her son was, of course, the most talented kid in the world, didn't need much coaxing and so they drove from San Diego to North Hollywood to attend the “Super Saturday.” They arrived half an hour before the announced time of the “Super Saturday” and found the line was already winding around the building. Assuming that things would move quickly, they got in line and experienced what they came to find out, was their first cattle call, a general public call for actors where literally hundreds show up. By three in the afternoon Jeremy's mother wanted to call it quits, but Jeremy convinced her that since they'd already spent so much time, another few minutes wouldn't matter. Three hours later Jeremy was finally admitted into a room with another twenty kids for a five minute audition. A few days later, the company called back to tell Jeremy that he'd been selected and that they wanted him to take beginning acting classes in Beverly Hills . After taking a few introductory classes Jeremy then started working as an extra. Here he got to see big Hollywood style productions. He worked as an extra on Crimson Tide, Get Shorty, An Eye for an Eye, How to make an American Quilt and several other commercial projects. He then got a featured role in a small regional commercial for Subway and started getting callbacks for other projects. Jeremy's audition for Dante's Peak went well and on a Sunday night before a Monday Memorial Day, Jeremy got the call from Dante's Peak producers saying that he would be playing Graham Wando, the son of the mayor of Dante's Peak played by Linda Hamilton. He would be flying out to Idaho to work for the next three months and would be leaving on Tuesday morning. The next six months were a whirlwind of travel and different experiences as Jeremy went from being an extra, to becoming a featured character in a major motion picture. |
